The live music scene has been on hold longer than any of us expected. In light of that, we find it our duty to work on local industry development and capacity-building by launching a series of workshops and residencies, starting with live sound engineering. As a music-centric organization, it is only logical for us to focus our resources on community-targeted engagements.
A brief overview of some local stats are themselves a call to action, with less than 30% of women represented in the music scene, let it be on stage, or even less than that as sound engineers and technicians.
Beirut and Beyond has always been an independent platform that caters to a diverse regional music scene and industry, with 7 festival editions under its belt, all accompanied by workshops, tours, and professionals’ meetings. We have made the conscious decision to pave the way for the rest of the industry players, by committing to creating equal opportunities and prioritizing better representation through a gender-balanced music scene.
Following our engagement with the Keychange initiative, we are encouraging women to develop their skills and grow their potential into successful careers.
Women Do Sound is a 6-day workshop for all Lebanon-based women or female-identifying individuals with an interest in live sound engineering.
The workshop will specifically tackle live sound for concerts, covering the basic concepts and techniques specific to live in a real-world context and through hands-on practice. In its first part, the workshop builds a solid understanding of the science behind sound, audio and hearing, to then move on to practical exercises with the main topics covered including miking techniques for live, stage patching, system set-up, mixer operation, running rehearsals and mixing techniques for live.
The workshop is led by Sana Romanos, a live sound engineer and project/tour manager based in Beirut, Lebanon. Sana holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from AUB and a Master’s degree in Audio Engineering from France. Her 7 years of experience working in the live music industry, from touring with local and international artists to working for the largest festivals in the Middle-Eastern region and Europe, including the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, gained her a renowned reputation in the field.
The workshop, free of charge, will take place from the 2nd to the 7th of March 2021, will include theory and practice, and will be divided into 7 phases.
Women Do Sound is addressed to sound technicians, studio sound engineers, audio students, musicians and anyone who is exposed to and interested in live sound and concerts.
The purpose of the workshop is to turn women with basic knowledge in sound engineering or basic familiarity with live and concerts, into professional technicians able to assist in live events, concerts and festivals.
The participants will also be invited to practice their newly-acquired skills by joining the technical team in the upcoming Beirut and Beyond editions.
A committee consisting of Sana Romanos (Sound Engineer), Tarek Mourad (Production Design and Technical Supervision – B&B team) and Liliane Chlela (artist) will review the applications and choose 6 participants based on background and acquired experience. The selected participants will be asked to confirm their availability for the entire period (2-7 March 2021) of the workshop which will take place in Beirut.
All covid-19 sanitary measures and restrictions will be respected during the workshop.
This program was developed by Beirut and Beyond, in collaboration with live sound engineer Sana Romanos, and funded by the Norwegian Embassy in Beirut and the Institut Francais in Lebanon.

فرضت الظروف الراهنة غياب الموسيقى الحيّة عن المشهد لفترة أطول مما كان متوقّعاً. ولذلك، نرى أنه من واجبنا العمل على تطوير القطاع الموسيقي المحلي وبناء القدرات من خلال إطلاق سلسلة من ورش العمل والفرص التدريبية في مجالات عدة بدءاً من هندسة الصوت الحيّة. وبما أن عمل “بيروت أند بيوند” يتمحور حول الموسيقى المستقلة، لا بد لنا من تركيز مواردنا على إطلاق مبادرات وبرامج مخصّصة للعاملين والعاملات في هذا المجال.
وفي هذا الإطار، يكفي إلقاء نظرة سريعة على بعض الإحصاءات لتلمُّس الحاجة إلى التحرك واتخاذ الخطوات المناسبة. (أعداد النساء في مجال الأداء الموسيقي/الـ”دي جي”/هندسة الصوت/التقنيات لا تتخطّى نسبة ٣٠٪ ).
“بيروت أند بيوند” منصّة مستقلة للموسيقى بمختلف أنواعها في المنطقة، وفي رصيدها 7 مهرجانات ترافقت جميعها مع ورش عمل وجولات ولقاءات للمهنيين العاملين في القطاع. لقد اتخذنا قراراً مدروساً بتمهيد الطريق أمام باقي الأفرقاء في عالم الموسيقى، من خلال الالتزام باستحداث فرص متساوية وإعطاء الأولوية لتحسين تمثيل المرأة في هذا القطاع عبر إرساء توازن أكبر بين حضورها وحضور الرجل في الساحة الموسيقية. وانطلاقاً من شراكتنا مع مبادرة Keychange، نشجّع النساء على تطوير مهاراتهن وتنمية طاقاتهن لبناء مسيرة مهنية ناجحة في عالم الموسيقى.
“وومن دو ساوند” ورشة عمل ممتدة لستة أيام وموجّهة إلى جميع النساء أو اللواتي تعرّفن عن ذاتهنّ كأنثى في لبنان الذين يبدون اهتماماً بالهندسة الصوتية الحية.
تغطّي ورشة العمل المفاهيم والتقنيات الأساسية في مجال الموسيقى الحية في سياق العمل الفعلي، فضلاً عن التمارين العملية. في القسم الأول من ورشة العمل، تُعمّق المشارِكات فهمهنّ للعلوم الصوتية والسمعية، قبل الانتقال إلى التمارين العملية التي تغطّي مجموعة من المواضيع الأساسية منها تقنيات الميكروفون في الموسيقى الحية، والتجهيز المسرحي، وتركيب الأجهزة وضبط إعداداتها، وتشغيل الـ”ميكسر”، وتنظيم البروفات والتدريبات، وتقنيات الـ”ميكساج” في الموسيقى الحية.
ورشة العمل بإدارة سنى رومانوس، وهي مهندسة صوت ومديرة مشاريع/جولات مقيمة في العاصمة اللبنانية بيروت. سنى حائزة على إجازة في الفيزياء من الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت وماجستير في الهندسة الصوتية من فرنسا. في رصيدها سبع سنوات من الخبرة في العمل في قطاع الموسيقى الحية، بدءاً من جولاتها مع فنانين محليين ودوليين ووصولاً إلى مشاركتها في أكبر المهرجانات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأوروبا، منها مهرجان Roskilde الذائع الصيت في الدنمارك، ما أكسبها شهرة واسعة في هذا المجال.
تُنظَّم ورشة العمل، وهي مجّانية، من 2 إلى 7 آذار/مارس 2021، وتجمع بين النظرية والتطبيق، وذلك من خلال تقسيمها إلى سبع مراحل.
المشاركة في ورشة العمل متاحة أمام النساء اللواتي يعملن في التقنيات الصوتية، ومهندِسات الصوت في الاستديو، والطالبات في الاختصاصات السمعية، والموسيقيات، وكل مَن يبدي اهتماماً بالعمل في مجال تقنيات الصوت الحي والحفلات الموسيقية المباشرة.
الهدف من ورشة العمل هو تحويل النساء اللواتي يمتلكن معارف أساسية في هندسة الصوت أو إلماماً أساسياً بتقنيات الصوت الحي والحفلات الموسيقية المباشرة، إلى مهنيات متخصصات في المجال التقني بحيث يمكن الاستعانة بهن في الفعاليات والحفلات الموسيقية والمهرجانات الحيّة.
المشارِكات مدعوّات أيضاً إلى مزاولة المهارات التي اكتسبنَها في ورشة العمل من خلال الانضمام إلى الفريق التقني في المهرجانات التي تنظّمها “بيروت أند بيوند” في المستقبل.
سوف تقوم لجنة مؤلَّفة من سنى رومانوس (مهندسة صوت)، وطارق مراد (تصميم إنتاج وإشراف تقني – فريق “بيروت أند بيوند”) وليليان شلالا (فنانة) بمراجعة الطلبات واختيار 6 مشارِكات استناداً إلى الخلفية والخبرات. وسوف يُطلَب من هؤلاء المشارِكات تأكيد قدرتهن على الالتزام بمتابعة جميع مراحل ورشة العمل (من 2 إلى 7 آذار/مارس 2021)، والتي تُقام في بيروت.
سيتم احترام جميع الإجراءات والقيود الصحية الخاصّة بفيروس كوفيد -19 خلال ورشة العمل.
