In the light of the current events and situation, Layale Chaker, Tarek Yamani, Khaled Yassine and Makram Abou El Hosn wanted to get together as past and present Lebanese local musicians and perform a mix of their original compositions and some of their unreleased tracks.
The live concert is taking place on Wednesday, 29th of December, at 8 PM, at St. Elie Church (Kantari).
ABOUT THE MUSICIANS
LAYALE CHAKER
Layale is a violinist, composer and Jerome Hill Fellow 2020-2022 whose musical world lies at the intersection of classical contemporary music, Jazz, Arabic music, and improvisation.
Deemed a “rising star” by BBC Music Magazine, she has graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London, she composes for film, theatre, dance and opera, and has received commissions and appeared with Holland Baroque, New World Symphony, the Palestine National Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble and Oxford Orchestra among others, performing at Festival d’Avignon, London Jazz Festival, Salle Pleyel, Berlin Philharmonic, Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Stone, and leads her own jazz quintet with whom she has released her debut album “Inner Rhyme”.
TAREK YAMANI
Born and raised in Beirut, Tarek is a Lebanese-American, New York-based pianist who taught himself jazz at the age of 19. He has been dedicated to exploring relationships between African-American Jazz and classical Arabic music which are most evident in his second album “Lisan Al Tarab: Jazz Conceptions in Classical Arabic”, and in his newly released “Peninsular” which fuses jazz with quarter-tones and the rhythms of the Arabian Peninsula.
A recipient of many prestigious awards, Tarek is also an educator, author of two self-published music books on rhythm and a film score composer of films screened in 70+ festivals around the world and broadcasted on AMC network, BBC and Sundance TV.
KHALED YASSINE
Khaled Yassine is an award-winning self-taught percussionist based in Beirut. He has performed and recorded with local and international artists such as Al Dimeola, Warda, Rene Mclean, Erik Trufaz, Bojan Z, Charbel Rouhana, Arthur Satyan, Oumeima, Soumayya Baalbaki, Ghazi Abdel Baki, Ilham al Madfai. In 2003, Khlaed co-founded the renowned Lebanese fusion band Fun Jan Shai, which has collaborated with many well-known musicians including Lebanese oud player and composer Ziad Al-Ahmadieh and Jordanian singer Macadi Nahhass. Khaled has worked extensively scoring dance-theatre and flamenco performances and serves as musical director and producer on the productions of the Lebanese Contemporary dancer Khouloud Yassine.
MAKRAM ABOU EL HOSN
Makram is a frequent performer in the Beirut music scene. You could find him on different stages playing Jazz, Rock, Classical, and Arabic music with different groups all within the same week. Currently working as a Jazz instructor at NDU, he also composes music for his own projects, and writes blogs on music and art/community.
Makram plays both electric and upright bass in a variety of styles. He writes Classical works for small chamber ensembles, and Jazz compositions for small and large ensembles of improvisers.
