B&B Local Residencies: Postcards

Our series of local residencies welcomed Postcards for a 2-week residency in January 2022 in Byblos to explore new creative processes.

Postcards is a dream pop trio formed in 2012 in Beirut, Lebanon. It consists of Julia Sabra (lead vocals, guitar, synth, organ, and bass synth), Marwan Tohme (guitar, bass, and backing vocals), and Pascal Semerdjian (drums, sampler, bass synth, and backing vocals).

Their music is defined by hushed vocals floating over expansive soundscapes that shift between harsh noise and dreamy atmospheres.

During their residency, Postcards members took their instruments and installed a makeshift studio, with recording gear generously loaned to them by Tunefork Studios. They found themselves with nearly finished 5 tracks in the first 2 days, and they decided to work on finishing an entire album.

Fadi Tabbal was part of the process from beginning to end. They also invited Sary Moussa, Serge Yared and Charbel Haber to join them and ended up producing one featured track with each of them.

The result is a 9-track album titled “In Parenthesis Vol.1”. It was entirely composed, written, recorded, in the old house in Byblos. It’s a product of the space, the surroundings, the weather. The songs were recorded live, with barely any overdubs. You can listen to it exclusively on Bandcamp. It’s free, but you can choose to pay if you would like to support them.

This residency was made possible with the support of the Norwegian Embassy in Beirut.
